North Woolley

Grade II Listed North Woolley Farm, part of the Arlington Estate, is a National Trust owned property recently vacated after more than eighty years of tenancy. Following this vacancy, The National Trust required a sympathetic and considered renovation of the house to enable the property to meet modern standards whilst being respectful of its character and materials.

During the previous tenancy the house remained mostly untouched, with no mains electric, water, or central heating. Ad-hoc and holding repairs had been completed during the tenancy, some of which were unsympathetic to the building, so causing consequent deterioration of the building fabric. The proposed design intent was therefore to retain and respect the building and carry out sensitive repairs and remedial works to prevent further deterioration.

The proposals also sought to reconcile the importance of preserving the details, materials and layout of the farmhouse whilst allowing it to reasonably accommodate a new tenant by both updating the service installation and improving facilities.
