mill barn

This delightful barn conversion, set in the gently sloping Somerset hills, creates further ancillary accommodation for our clients in their neighbouring cottage. Whilst the style of the building is in keeping with the adjacent barn and the local character, it has been designed to make the best use of natural light within the space available and to provide a visual connection from the indoor space out into the courtyard.

Retaining the existing barn walls where possible, the building’s material palette is predominantly timber and stone, so as not to be over-powering and to remain respectful to the site’s context and the surrounding buildings.

The interior exposes the new roof’s structure whilst offering a modern fresh feel, where the glazing in the gable ends adds to the sense of light and space throughout, with the French doors in the living room opening up onto a paved courtyard. Strips of blue glazing between the roof structure and gable wall in the bedroom give the roof a weightless appearance, as well as providing a charming and refreshing feature.
