singer instruments

Situated within Exmoor National Park we had to address significant planning issues in order to obtain approval for the new two-storey extension to Singer Instruments. Singer Instruments is a family run business, established in 1934, which has operated in Roadwater since 1979. The business designs and manufactures precision dissection, robotic and micro-manipulation instruments for use in scientific research. We have been involved in the expansion of the buildings to support the evolving business since 1998, most recently designing a new building which supports the expansion of the office and provides purpose built space for the fabrication, assembly and testing of the high precision instruments.

Through negotiated pre-application discussions with the National Park Authority, the challenge was to create an interesting, quality bespoke building that not only met the needs of the business but also provided a building that was acceptable in the context of the National Park’s characteristics where industrial businesses of this type are unusual. The building is highly insulated and incorporates measures to reduce over-heating in the summer whilst providing a pleasant, naturally lit interior for its users.

Construction was completed in 2011and in September 2012 we were nominated by West Somerset Building Control and won the Best Commercial Building Award in the local LABC Building Excellence Awards in recognition of the high standard of design. In June 2013 the project was further awarded with a 'Highly Commended' in the South West Regional LABC Building Excellence Awards in the Best Small Commercial Building category.
